Drum Roll Please: Exhale's New Executive Director Is...

posted October 4, 2017

Exhale is thrilled to announce that Reverend Susan Chorley will be Exhale’s new Executive Director. Susan, an Exhale co-founder and former board member, is an experienced leader who brings a deep understanding of Exhale’s pro-voice mission and work to the role.

Last July, in partnership with Koya Search Partners, Exhale announced the search for a visionary and strategic leader to guide the organization into the future. Exhale has found that leader in Susan.

In her 17 years of involvement with Exhale, Susan has held deep relationships with staff, volunteers, and others in the Exhale community, serving as an advisor and thought leader. Susan is also a public storyteller, having first shared her personal abortion experience in a 2016 Parent’s Magazine article featuring the stories of mothers who have had abortions.

This publicity led to the launch of Exhale’s Pro-Voice Sermon Tour, during which Susan shared her story as a means to create space for bringing abortion into church communities. Building on the success of the tour, The Daily Beast published her op-ed in October 2016. Susan was named a “2017 Faith Leader to Watch” by the Center for American Progress, receiving praise for her boldness in preaching about her abortion to congregations around the country, and was featured in a recent CNN.com piece about Exhale’s groundbreaking pro-voice work.

Susan is already working with Acting Executive Director Mara Kassoff on transitioning into her new role. Susan will continue to be based in Boston, and Mara will soon move into the role of Deputy Director in Exhale’s Oakland headquarters. Mara will continue to oversee programs while building a new shared leadership model with Susan, one that will enable Exhale to serve its community through embracing the power of pro-voice, from coast to coast.

Please join us in welcoming Susan as Exhale’s incoming Executive Director.
