Our Truths-Nuestras Verdades zine
Our Truths-Nuestras Verdades is a printed zine published by Exhale in English and Spanish. Its mission is to bring to light the diversity of abortion experiences by inviting each woman to speak her own truth, in her own voice. Through daring essays, reflective poems, and bold illustrations, contributors have the freedom to bust myths, challenge stereotypes, confront judgment, and explore social questions. Its goal is to transform the divisive social climate that surrounds abortion by creating a public space for women to share their stories.
History & Next Steps
The magazine began as a grassroots project, founded by Emily Louise Barcklow in 2004 in Mexico City. It was produced by a network of advocates and activists throughout the United States and Mexico until 2006, when Exhale gave it a permanent home. The last printed edition was published by Exhale in the Winter of 2009. Since then, Exhale has worked on integrating the mission and strategies of the zine throughout the organization and it has served as inspiration for growing the Pro-Voice Movement. With this website we will be able to publish media created by women and men with personal abortion experiences on a more regular basis and create more opportunities to engage with the content and the contributors. We expect to curate content from our website and publish printed versions of the zine from time to time.
