I had an abortion at 23 weeks for medical reasons. He was our very wanted second son and it was the most devastating situation I have ever been in. I am lucky enough to live in California and to have been able to have everything taken care of by the incredible staff at Stanford. Most women are not so lucky. I would love to be a voice for those women in the future to make change in this world so a horrible situation does not have to be made even more difficult.

Hello Kimberly, thank you for your story. I went through the same experience – I had a daughter and then my very much wanted, long waited for second child was diagnosed with a debilitating disorder. I made the mistake and had the big scan late at 21 weeks pregnant and that is when we found out. Due to living in the republican red southern states – my husband and I were told we had 2 days to make a decision to terminate as the closest facility (which was located 4 hours drive away) only allowed abortions up till 21 weeks and 5 days. It was the most devastating and heart wrenching experience and then the most horrific experience to try and access the healthcare my husband and I were forced to quickly decide. My life mission is to change the culture surrounding abortion and to allow all women access to this very much needed healthcare procedure. Also, the clinic never offered counseling services or information after I was breaking down afterwards- only birth control which was even more depressing.

I chose to terminate my pregnancy in May at 30 weeks because my son was diagnosed with duadenal atresia and Trisomy 21. I feel that I am forced to become an activist for a cause I never thought I’d rely on myself. If I don’t speak up for myself, then some old, republican, white man will gladly speak for me. In the discussion of abortion, my voice matters more than his! I’m obviously impassioned but I don’t know how or where to start without stumbling over myself.

I had an abortion in 2003 and have gone through all the emotions. My abortion was between my 2 daughters and was for medical reasons. Funny thing is that we had beat the odds. I am a carrier for an x-link debilitating disease. Our son had beat it, we told everyone we were pregnant and then to find out his kidneys were not working and her wouldn’t survive after birth. This is not to say I know any more or less than any other abortion survivor. I am quite shy and not comfortable talking on the phone, but if there were something else I could do, to help others I would like to consider it.

    Thank you,
    Jen Goldberg
