En un día perdí todo

Submitted by: Lisbeth M.F.

I lost everything in a single day

Hi, I’m Ecuadorian, I’m now 23 years old and I’m daring to tell my story because I’ve never had anyone I could talk to about it and sometimes it’s good to unburden oneself. How better than with Exhale/pro-voice.

Well, I had a boyfriend named AM, he was actually the first person I fell madly in love with, it was a lovely but very toxic relationship, I lasted 4 years with him during which we broke up and got back together many times.

In 2016, after getting back together with this person again, I was 20 at the time, I got pregnant, it wasn’t really planned as you can imagine but it happened, and as soon as I found out I didn’t hesitate for even a second about having it because in spite of my mistake I was determined to face it and take on the responsibility, but just the same I was very scared because I didn’t know what was going to happen.

It wasn’t easy for either of us to absorb the news because we were still very young and immature. At first I relied on his support and that really helped me a lot and comforted me, but that support didn’t last for long, I think it was a week to be precise. After a week I began to realize the truth, which was that he didn’t want to be a father, not just because of fear but because at that time he was using drugs and didn’t want the baby to be born with problems, and for other reasons.

He then began pressuring me to have an abortion, so much that it reached the point of threatening and blackmailing me… And since I was madly in love he could manipulate me at will, but on this subject he couldn’t entirely do it because I didn’t want an abortion, I was determined to continue my pregnancy.

Then one day he asked me to stay and sleep in his house so we could resolve the problem and I accepted, very moved, and went to his house to sleep. The next day we got up and I realized that nothing had changed, he was continuing with his decision that I should have an abortion, as he told me that he already had abortion pills in his hands, at that point I was at 2 months and I refused to do it, then behind my back he crushed the pills and put them In my drink, really, when he gave me the drink I trusted that he wouldn’t do anything to harm me because I didn’t think he was a bad man and I was blinded by my love for him. Then I drank it, never imagining what he had done, I realized what he had done when I finished the drink and there was a residue, I asked him but he denied it.

The afternoon of that same day I began to feel very sick, I had some very, very strong cramps and when I went to the bathroom I noticed a lot of bleeding… At the moment i never imagined what was happening to me, I didn’t think I was having an involuntary/ spontaneous abortion [or miscarriage, same word in Spanish] because I knew nothing about the subject, I began to think it was normal (that I was having my period) so I didn’t tell my mother what had happened and went on as usual until the next day when the same symptoms were continuing and I didn’t wait any longer and went with my boyfriend, I made him [take me] to be checked and when I went to a health center to be examined, they gave me the news that I had had an involuntary/spontaneous miscarriage [abortion].

I felt awful because he left me there and went away at that point, I was alone then, I had no one, and I had no choice but to ask for help, I went to my grandmother’s and she called my mother at work and told her what had happened to me, and she asked me to go to another health center to be checked more thoroughly and I went with my sister-in-law and they did a transvaginal ultrasound and the doctor told me that I had a double pregnancy and that i had lost one and the other was at risk, he ordered complete rest but it was still possible that I might lose it.

The next day I had to go to the hospital because I had lost it and I had to have a curettage (I don’t remember the name) because I’d had an incomplete miscarriage [abortion] and they had to remove the rest of the second fetus.

In conclusion, they were very terrible days, especially when I was admitted to the hospital. In the end my boyfriend at that time never accompanied me to the hospital and wasn’t with me for my surgery, he disappeared that day and decided to go off with another girl (he had been cheating on me with her all along), I found out because I saw some photos from that day.

To tell the truth, after what happened I realized a lot of things and finally opened my eyes although it cost me a lot because I loved him with my whole life, but I managed to do it and never went back to him because he did me a lot of harm throughout the time I was with him, physical as well as psychological, emotional.

Since that moment I never again spoke of my experience with anyone, nor with my parents, and I’ve held all this and more inside for three years and sometimes I feel like at any moment I’ll stop being brave and I’ll explode. I hope that never happens because I wouldn’t know what to do.

Thank you for taking a few minutes of your time and reading my story, it’s very meaningful to me.

With nothing else to add, I thank you again for reading my story and making me feel I’m not alone.

You deserve nonjudgmental
after-abortion support.
